One thing beginners are usually concerned about when it comes to keeping wine around the house is storage. Can you store wine in the refrigerator? How long will wine last in the refrigerator? And so on. The answer is sure; you can keep your wine in the fridge if you want. That’s fine for a bottle or two. It’ll last about a week before it starts to turn. The problem with this is that your fridge is probably too cold and you will have to wait some time to let it warm before you can drink it again or you won’t get any flavor from it. Also, letting it warm like this will cut down on the amount of time the wine stays drinkable. Another thing to consider is what if you end of with a lot of wine that needs storing? You can’t very well use your refrigerator for that. You can, though, find a nice wine bottle cooler to store any number of bottles at the perfect temperature.
The great thing about wine bottle coolers is that they come in different sizes to comfortably accommodate whatever stock you have. From the casual drinker who needs only a single bottle wine cooler to someone who keeps several mixed cases around and would benefit from owning a 30 bottle wine cooler. Plus they are relatively inexpensive, unless you look at something more commercial such as any Vinotemp International
or Chambrer models.
You don’t have to go for broke though when purchasing one of these wine coolers. Vinotemp has some great products and are fairly popular, but for the more budget friendly manufacturers Danby has excellent values with a wide range of sizes. Their smallest is the 6 bottle wine cooler. You can find one for less than $100. It fits easily on a countertop and takes up little room as it holds 2 bottles per rack. It’s an energy efficient cooler for the green wine drinker. There’s a digital display for temperature readout with an interior light that can stay on to show off your goods.
If you have the money to spend and want something built in to your existing bar area or kitchen, EdgeStar has some sweet designs. This 46 bottle wine cooler is one example. A dual-paned glass door to ensure refrigeration, a blue LED light to display your wines. It’s tiered to control temperatures for both red and white wines. These are probably the next best thing to Vinotemp.
The important thing isn’t price though. You want something that’s going to do the job and that’s to prolong the lifespan of your wine collection. It’s important to properly store your wine in order to get the most value out of it. All wines spoil but some, as with white wines, have a shorter shelf life than others. Corks dry when bottles aren’t stored correctly and oxidation sets in to turn your wines without you knowing it. Screw caps offer better preservation, but even then you want to be able to grab a bottle when you are ready for it and have it at the appropriate temperature. That’s the case for both red and white wines. Design and appearance are secondary for some, but when you are showcasing wines you probably do want something that’s going to impress. There is a clear benefit to owning a bottle wine cooler rather than keeping your wine in the fridge and storage temperature should be a deciding factor for you.
