The Greeks once called Italy Oenotria, the land of wine. You can understand why glancing at the list of appellations below. Grape vines flourish in Italy like fatties in America, but don’t let that dissuade you. This list is solely for reference, I wouldn’t attempt to memorize it unless you have that kind of commitment to learning about wine. Being that it is an extensive list, I’ve included only the DOC and DOCG appellations. Enjoy.

What year did Salice Salentino receive DOC Status? What are the requirements in Salice Salentino for DOC Satus wine making?
Good question! Perhaps I should write up an article on this small Italian DOC. To answer your first question, it wasn’t until 1976 that the Salice Salentino (pronounced SAH-le-chay Sahl-ehn-TEEN-oh) municipality received DOC status. It’s a small community of mainly vineyards and oil orchards in the southern portion of Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot. As to DOC regulations, the only requirement is that Salice Salentino wine must contain at least 90% Negroamaro and 10% Malvasia Nera (this softens the tannins of the bitter Negroamaro). The only aging requirements are for Reserves (Riservas), which must age for at least 24 months. If you can find them, they aren’t very expensive, maybe around $15 to $20.
